Spine Healthy or Unhealthy., Swati Joshi

Spine healthy and unhealthy series : Part – 10 ,We Yogis have to help our human species to stop from deteriorating and evolve further.

We are all Yogis. We have to help our human species stop them from going through hell. As we are marching very fast towards deteriorating very early and leading towards many diseases. We have to make this stop.
What are we doing in the name of yoga ?
We are torturing the shoulder joint, hip joint, and still remaining unsatisfied.
We are torturing the weak links of the spine where movement started early, i.e., at the level of C1 -C2, C7-T1, T12-L1, and L5-S1.

So all the diseases develop here because of our stupid behaviour. What we are doing, Which Nature will never allow us to do.
I’m so sorry to say that this is not evolution. We are torturing our bodies to an extent in making different forms, so it will break, and it’s happening today at a very early age.
Why?
The law of physics says weak links always snap. So we have the dislocation of joints, ligament tear, meniscus tear, loss of normal curvature of spine, dehydration of disc, decreasing joint spaces /arthritis, slip disc, formation of cyst, hardening/ calcification ( tumer) etc and this list goes on. This process happens continuously within our body as nothing happens suddenly in our body.
We are not aware of this, and It seems,I think we don’t want to as we are engrossed in treating signs and symptoms giving physical and chemical mimicry.
This anatomical distortion at the level of atoms leads us to slow down the physiological function of organ systems, which further leads towards permanent pathological changes in tissues.

Are we aware? In today’s modern society, we have lost and forgotten the movement of both girdles at hip joints and shoulder joints. Therefore, they lost the physical stability and mobility of our central axis . These two joints are bridges between extremities to the trunk attached through muscles to the central axis /spine. We ignore signs like motion sickness, migraine, giddiness, vertigo, sinusitis, arthritis etc.
If we want to do any of these movements, there has to be stability between two consecutive vertebrae through muscles.
The muscles of the trunks are attached to the spine, the spine to shoulder girdle to upper limbs and spine to the pelvis girdle to lower limbs. All these muscles must move smoothly, not stiffly and hardly.
There is mobility of the spine at the joint at Occipital and C1, then C7 and T1, then T12 and L1, then L5 and S1. Then, there is mobility at the hip joint. Then, on the top of the spine, we have scapula, clavicle, and arm bone.
Scapula and clavicle and arm bone. They can all be separated from the torso. It is a totally separate unit existing for multiple movements of the forearm and fingers.
Components of the shoulder girdle are attached to the rib cage with the help of muscles.

Are we aware that we fix our shoulder girdle – rib with spine complexes to such an extent that we hardly remember to move the scapula and clavicle freely and smoothly on the ribcage
What we really move is the arm bone and mainly in the elbow joint and maximum at the joint between the phalanges of the fingers for skilful movements of hands and fingers.
As we gradually rise upward, the mobility slows down, and it is a big zero when it comes to the level of scapula and clavicle.
The same is true at the lower end, i.e. Pelvic girdle. The muscles that are attached between the head and neck of the femur/ thigh bone and pelvis,we have totally forgotten that they have some mobility. They have become fixed parts as if they are ligaments of the hip joint, and the same is true with our Paraspinal musculature related to our spine.
What we have is the mobility of our feet while walking inversion and eversion of foot with pronation, supination of toes. Rocking movement, at ankle joint, i.e., dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, The flexion, extension with rotation of thigh bone and adduction, abduction of thigh leading towards anteversion and retroversion of pelvis then at each inter facetal joint of spine there is sliding and rotational movement.
This all has gone into automation, and as this is natural which nobody has taught us. Hence, we damage its genetics and transfer it to the next generation.
So, through our intelligence, we have to learn these natural physical laws and follow them .
Exactly here, Yoga Shastra stands.
How many of us like to understand and  learn the secret and want to apply at a practical level seriously, sincerely, and regularly?
Instead, if you observe, yoga in the name of exercise is more popular and becomes injurious to health like sports and leads us towards diseases.
Shame on us.
As flexion is a very strong force, and we are not making efforts to extend which are weak by nature, hence flexors take over.
Hence, there is no question of floating. We have frozen our movements of natural extension, mostly our quadriceps muscles from the front are weak, and abductors from inner side and abductors from  the lateral side become hard to stop us collapsing outward, and still we collapse. Because the hamstring from the back and Adductors from the medial side are very strong flexors, they take over, and they are more or less fixed, having most of the mobility in the knee joint. But again, posterior side muscles crossing the knee are strong flexors.
Muscles attached to the back side of the torso/ spine are extensors, but the front sides are again strong flexors . So all these basics, ultimately resulted in zero mobility of the torso and we are using only two organs of action i.e. arm for give and take legs for walking or somehow similar actions in the name of physical activities.
Not only that, with the present mechanization, we have forgotten the movement called pronation and supination, and we have advances of push button technology, we are slowly losing movement of the wrist joint. What we have is only typing movements of fingers, and gradually, the man is going to become a robot.
This deterioration should stop at the right movement. People try to stop this deterioration by exactly behaving in wrong movements which are in the shoulder joint , hip joint, knee joint and they call it an exercise whereas we abuse and misuse these joints and lose the movement in axial joints and forget also.
Exercising these joints has more or less turned into exertion, exertion leads to friction, friction leads to inflammation, then to spasms, then swelling to destruction of bones and also fatigue in the muscles.
In the name of Yoga again exercise like torturous movements of ligaments, which are holding these joints, have led to subluxation of joints, and they are termed as flexibility of the body. Which is really big zero flexibility.
It is more or less crossing the natural barriers of binding of joints and a joint between the consecutive vertebrae, which has got sliding movement, which is practically and totally forgotten.

Gravity is playing its role to pull us down more and more. Therefore, a lot of hunchbacks in the thorax are seen with distorted secondary lordosis of the neck, giving rise to table lamp deformities of the cervical spine.
Then, the viscera inside the abdomen is slowly popping out, giving diseases like herniation, prolapses, and sagging of glands like the prostate.
So, the lordosis of the lumbar spine is also getting straight or exaggerated with increasing the angle between lumbo-sacral joints. Therefore, nowadays, we see people, either increasing the lordosis or loss of lordosis.

Further, this will lead to anatomical distortion in the organs, which are stored in the rib cage and abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity by which the physiological functioning of different glands has also slowed down. The physiological functioning of different systems like respiration, circulation, gastrointestinal tract, digestive, and reproductive systems has also slowed down.

In both the above cases, our vertebral space decreases, and pressure between the two vertebrae increases. The end result is disc bulge and dehydration that causes cracks in the discs. The body begins its defence mechanism and forms osteophytes to stop this abnormal pressure, and this process of damage goes on, which we have discussed in all these parts.

In present-day society, one wants to enjoy life. So it is very important that we arrange our torso in such a way that it can learn to live in uncongenial surroundings.
